Bio : I followed my father’s footsteps into radio in 1988 at WBUR and WMBR simultaneously, as an intern reporter/producer and a free form DJ, respectively. I continue on at WMBR (to my own amazement), and dip in and out of WBUR in my current guise as an independent strategist and producer. My path has taken me through commercial radio, international broadcasting, and nationally syndicated news programming. I was privileged to be part of a formative team at Monitor Radio (RIP), helping to grow it in our heyday into the second (next to NPR) most important and respected provider of daily news on pubradio.

I’ve piloted two news programming concepts – Atlas, Radio Stories from Around the World (2004), and Monitor Radio II (1998), which was an experiment in producing a daily news magazine with public radio sensibility for commercial radio. I continue to experiment with new formats and marketing strategies for new media platforms.

I began my indie business, SchardtMEDIA, in 1998 and have been lucky to work on some great projects with wonderful, talented people at the networks and stations around the country, including launching public radio\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'s newest network, Native Voice One, From the Top, World Radio Network from NPR, Radio Netherlands’ documentary series, and PRI’s Public Interactive. With Walrus Research’s George Bailey and Craig Oliver, I initiated in 2003 a 2-year benchmark study of public radio programming through the lens of independent/freelance producers with partner/investors CPB, MPR, NPR, PRI, KCRW, and WGBH.

In September 2007, I was elected to be the Executive Director of AIR. If you haven\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'t yet, it\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'s time to join AIR.

Bio : My work as an audio producer since 2000 includes creating and producing Musicians in their own words, a long-running series which has twice been awarded national CPB grants and to date has aired 40+ features on NPR’s Morning Edition and All Things Considered, with many more on APM\'s The Story and on local stations. Featured performers include unsung heroes of American music as well as icons such as Renée Fleming, Poncho Sanchez, Yo-Yo Ma, and the late Bo Diddley. A favorite early piece in the series was awarded the Best Documentary: Silver Award at the 2004 Third Coast International Audio Festival.

in 2013, I received PRX/Sloan Foundation STEM funding to produce \"The Elusive Digital Stradivarius,\" which aired on many stations and nationally on The Story. In late 2012, I produced the WUNC Pop-Up Music Club for North Carolina Public Radio, supported by a grant from the NC Humanities Council. From August 2009 until September 2011, I was senior producer of Americana, the BBC’s weekly radio program of US life, culture and current affairs. Our program was heard on BBC Radio 4, BBC World Service, and Sirius XM, and in 2011, three of my pieces were chosen for ‘Pick of the Week,’ the program showcasing the BBC’s best programming across its radio outlets.

I\'m also a composer and violinist; music from my album \"Quiet Life Motel\" has been heard nationally on NPR, and has been licensed for use on and podcasts including KCRW\'s Animals Aloud. I\'ve created a variety of musical soundbeds used by APM\'s The Story, and wrote and performed the Americana theme music heard on BBC World Service.

Other work includes ... curating a series of audio short subjects — audioambush.org — presented at the American Film Institute\'s Silver Theatre, and projects for the National Endowment for the Arts, Weekend America, and Speaking of Faith (APM).

In July 2008, I presented my work at the Duke University Center for Documentary Studies Summer Audio Institute. I worked 2000-2002 on the staff of NPR’s Performance Today, and, before breaking into radio, worked five years as a reporter for the small but feisty Chapel Hill News. I live in Takoma Park, MD, just outside Washington DC.

Media Experience : Community Radio, Radio Documentary, Television, Print Media, On-air talent,

Bio : I am an independent editor, journalism trainer, and newsroom consultant, with public media clients across the country. I provide network-level interim and backup story editing, training in news management and journalism skills, and consulting and coaching in newsroom organization and leadership.

I am an award-winning public media editor, newsroom leader, reporter, and producer with over a decade of experience in large and small stations, and working with national networks and shows.

Before striking out on my own, I was Managing Editor at Colorado Public Radio, where I led day-to-day operations of CPR\'s 17-person newsroom, editing news features and series, overseeing the newscast unit, and guiding ongoing and breaking coverage.

Before CPR, I served as news director at WMFE in Orlando, Florida. I planned, edited, and reported on award-winning coverage of daily stories and major events. I helped create a new local talk show and re-shape a long-running arts show. I instituted numerous newsroom management systems -- from writing WMFE\'s first formal journalism ethics code, to creating emergency coverage plans, to installing a rigorous start-to-finish editing process.

Prior to that, I was based in Washington D.C., as an editor, producer, and reporter at the broadcast news agency Feature Story News.

Radio-wise, I hosted, wrote, and coproduced the public radio show Pop Vultures, a coproduction of American Public Media and Prairie Home Productions. This show was considered groundbreaking and \"ahead of its time\" for its use of music and unscripted discussions of pop culture. It was one of the earliest offerings on PRX, and won \"Most Licensed Series\" for 2004. It aired in Seattle, Minneapolis, Philadelphia, and many smaller markets. The show was beloved by some pretty wonderful people, including the folks at Transom, Ira Glass, and Jeff Hansen at KUOW.

I carried on for several years with a podcast at Little Radio in downtown Los Angeles. This was an opportunity to hone my DJ/music selection chops.

After getting out of radio for several years and working in publishing, I recently completed the Transom story workshop on Catalina Island with Rob Rosenthal to learn the basics of hands-on recording and editing. I\'m excited to get back into public radio!

Holding a microphone gives me an excuse to do what I love-- talking to people, hearing their stories, learning their perspective.

Notes : From July 2011 to August 2012, I circumnavigated the world on cargo ships, spending time in port cities, and producing audio and photo documentaries about the people who carry out the physical act of global trade.
