Bio : THE WFMT RADIO NETWORK was born more than 40 years ago when 98.7WFMT, Chicago’s classical music and fine arts radio station, began syndicating programs like the Chicago Symphony Orchestra to the rest of the world. The Network’s goals were and remain clear: create and share the best fine arts radio programming, stay flexible, and trust in peoples’ curiosity and desire to discover great art.

As technologies evolve, we have sought to link radio programs with other media (video, podcasts, websites, apps) so that radio stations, arts organizations and listeners can interact in more elaborate and fulfilling ways.

Our focus is to use radio to help make complex and nuanced art forms available to everyone. Our roster of shows includes classical music, jazz, opera, poetry, folk music, oral history (like that practiced by our longtime colleague, Studs Terkel), international music and arts festivals, theater, experimental music, Latin American music, pre-eminent overnight services like our Beethoven and Jazz Networks and the beloved daily music appreciation show, Exploring Music with Bill McGlaughlin.

We believe in radio’s potential to tell stories. Even when our programs are primarily about taking listeners to a faraway concert hall to hear a great artist, we seek to give context and offer extra insight. This might be a carefully edited interview excerpt, a bit of ambient sound or the spontaneous reaction of the audience. We strive to capture how it feels to walk the streets of Salzburg, Santa Fe, Edinburgh, St. Petersburg or Shanghai amidst the electric buzz of one of the world’s great arts festivals or to experience the energy and anticipation backstage before a world premiere of a symphony.

We have built relationships with hundreds of radio stations throughout the United States and work one-on-one with their program directors and other staff to help them blend our syndicated programs with their own unique local program- ming. We are also building new partnerships with stations in Europe (through the European Broadcasting Union), China, Latin America, the Middle East, Australia, New Zealand and elsewhere. Through our new partnership with the Public Radio Exchange (PRX) we can distribute programs more flexibly and efficiently, and our affiliates benefit from the fact that we work to raise money for programs, enabling us to provide most programs to stations at no cost.

Looking ahead, we are excited to expand our offerings to include:
• more international festivals (with a dash of travel and history);
• a broader selection of programs about jazz – a distinctly American art form;
• poetry, through an exciting new partnership with the Poetry Foundation;
• thematic programs on diverse topics such as how an orchestra searches for the right music director, the role of Native American culture in shaping American music, the relationship between classical music and science, or how classical music is flourishing in unexpected new ways in places like Asia, Africa, the Middle East and South America;
• documentaries about historic performers and composers;
• and important live broadcasts from well-known venues like Carnegie Hall and the Festspielhaus in Salzburg, or a thrilling but obscure new music festival in some faraway place on the other side of the world. We are always seeking partnerships with arts organizations and artists with unique stories.

Media Experience : Community Radio, Print Media, Podcasting,

Bio : Radio is my second career. Architecture was my first. The best part of that job was interviewing the clients, before starting design. Often, I found myself counseling couples as they articulated their fears and dreams, sometimes for the first time. They would say \\\\\\\"I never realized family mealtimes were so important to you\\\\\\\" or \\\\\\\"what do you mean you need some personal space?\\\\\\\" I loved finding order, symbolism and trajectory in their lives. This love has brought me to public radio.

I was an unpaid intern at KUOW in Seattle. Now I freelance there. I have been doing radio since March 2007. In that time, I have produced well over a hundred pieces. I also produce a podcast on composting for Seattle Tilth, and wrote a popular regional book called The Urban Farm Handbook.

Bio : Andrew Mills, M.S., is Assistant Professor in the Journalism Program at Northwestern University in Qatar.

As a journalist, he is particularly interested in telling stories about the migration of people and its impact. In 2011, he led a field reporting trip to Europe to chronicle the lives of North Africans who migrated during the Arab Spring. He also helped lead www.RefugeeLives.org, a project to document the lives of refugees living in Jordan.

Increasingly, he is focused on the great global migration from rural areas to the city and has reported on the cautionary tales of Brazil’s urbanization and on the impact of migration in India.

He has lived in the Middle East since 2006, when he left his job as a political reporter for the Toronto Star, Canada’s largest newspaper, and moved to Beirut. In more than a decade working as a professional journalist, Mills has worked on five continents, covering everything from elections to crime to armed conflict and has learned to work in just about every media platform except for television. In our next documentary, set to air Nov 2015, we\'ll take a look at the problems/solutions around hunger and food access in the Sacramento region. Bio : Our mission is to tear down the technical divide between storytellers and their audience.

Every day 4 billion radio sets are turned on and tuned in.

Stories are spread through the airwaves from Alaska to Antarctica. From city’s to rural areas. Radio gives voice to street children in Tanzania, indigenous journalists in Nepal and war correspondents covering the Arab uprising.

Radio touches our hearts. The stories we hear change our perspective. Radio can strengthen communities and build nations.

But despite radio being the most widespread media on the planet, there can still be a long way from storytellers to their audience.

Our mission is to close that gap….

Bio : I’m an audio/radio producer living in Philadelphia. I work for WHYY as an Associate Producer on the National Public Radio show, “Fresh Air with Terry Gross.” I also take on freelance work, mostly for museums, artists and galleries, but I’m always interested in new projects.

My love of music first drew me to radio. I got my start at WXPN, the University of Pennsylvania’s public radio station, which is recognized as a leader in the “Adult Album Alternative” radio format. At ‘XPN I worked on the Peabody Award winning show, “Kids Corner” hosted by Kathy O’Connell. Later, I became a producer for the “World Cafe with David Dye,” which is distributed by NPR.

My first freelance client was Philadelphia’s Eastern State Penitentiary, a historic prison that is now a museum. In 2002, Eastern State hired me to design the soundtrack for “Terror Behind the Walls,” their annual haunted house. We are still working together today. Over the years, I’ve worked with the staff at Eastern State to create and update dozens of pieces for “The Voices of Eastern State” Audio Tour. I’ve also grown my list of clients to include the Whitney Museum of American Art, The Association for Public Art and Philadelphia’s Mighty Writers.

I’ve taught radio production at the college level and, in the late 90′s, spent a couple of years working as the Stage Manager for Huffamoose, a rock band signed to Interscope Records.
