Bio : I’m Kate Gonzales, and I’m passionate about the meaningful storytelling emblematic of public media. I grew up in rural Calaveras County and am currently completing a bachelor’s degree in sociology at Sacramento State University.

As a sociology student, I see great power in amplifying the voices of people often marginalized. Understanding issues like poverty, racism, and gender pave the way to empathy, constructive dialogue and problem solving. I believe in communication and understanding as a pathway to democracy, and see public media as an avenue to that ideal.

Bio : (Note: please forgive the lack of punctuation - there\\\'s a formatting problem in this field.)
I cover health care for Rhode Island Public Radio in Providence, RI. I\\\'m also available for independent work.

Until recently I was an independent producer and adjunct professor based in Kentucky (near Lexington, and one hour each from Cincinnati and Louisville). I taught journalism and broadcasting at Georgetown College and advised and managed the student radio station, WRVG.

Previously, I was the environment reporter for Louisville, KYs NPR news station, WFPL, as well as managing editor and architect of a new, regional environmental news service called the Ohio River Radio Consortium (see the CJRs nice coverage of us at http://bit.ly/bvKJ5D). Prior to that, I reported for Wyoming Public Radio in Laramie, WY, hosted Morning Edition, and helped create and co-host the station\\\'s PRNDI-award winning weekly news magazine,Open Spaces. I was also a regular on-air host for two of Wyoming Public Television\\\'s public affairs programs.

I have a Masters in Journalism from Columbia University, and previous professional experience in corporate communications and nonprofit fundraising.

Originally from Chicago, I\\\'ve lived in and made a living all over, including in San Francisco, New York City, Laramie, WY, Iowa City, Madrid, Spain, and Louisville, Kentucky. I\\\'m also a musician, having co-founded a Bulgarian women\\\'s choir and a three-woman, one-tap dancer ukulele band in Brooklyn (The Ukuladies, still going strong!) and an actress with community/regional theater.
