Bio : I make radio for CBC and NPR. My stories and interviews have been heard on Spark, Metro Morning, The Current, DNTO, On The Media, State of the Re:Union, and more.

Seeking out immersive sound, and great stories. My mic has captured knitting inmates, Alzheimer’s sufferers, calypso queens, literary speed daters, internet wage-slaves, and media moguls. I always work to tease out narrative, emotion, and humour.

This audio obsession started with podcasting. My show, I Like You, features peoples’ personal stories about the trials of online dating, living with HIV, decades long crushes, bathhouse hookups, and growing old together. It’s been downloaded over 250,000 times.

Radio people are my kind of people. That’s why I founded the Canadian Sound & Story Workshop. We teach classes, hold events, and generally share the radio love around.

Cheryl Devall
City Editor, The Daily World

PO Box 595
Opelousas , Louisiana,  70571

cdevall@mindspring.com

Available For : Consulting, Mentoring, Public Radio,
Story editing and project management - experienced in spot news, features and documentary production

Media Experience : Radio Documentary, Print Media,
Veteran public radio correspondent and editor at the national program and large-market station level

Bio : To add years to my life and spring to my step I\'ve chosen to relocate to Southwest Louisiana. As much as I am African American and feminist, I am at my core a storyteller steeped in and hungry to foster the best practices of my other dominant culture, journalism. That\'s why I\'m having a ball in my present situation as city editor of the Daily World, a small and lively newspaper with a loyal traditional constituency and a rapidly growing digital/social media footprint.

Among 121 AM and FM radio stations in the Los Angeles market – in which the top-rated local television news and many leading radio stations program primarily in Spanish – my previous shop, Southern California Public Radio, consistently ranked in the top 25 during my seven years as Senior News Editor. Because I demonstrated concern for the dignity of everyone involved in the newsgathering process, a senior colleague regarded me as “the conscience of the newsroom” amid major changes in our workplace.

Delivered award-winning coverage of the Los Angeles riots for National Public Radio in 1992 and reported on the economic consequences of the unrest 10 years later in a week-long series for American Public Media’s Marketplace.

Joined several editors who worked with WUNC staff and freelance reporters on a series about the present-day realities of poverty in North Carolina 40 years after the federal War on Poverty. This public radio series won national and regional honors, including a DuPont-Columbia Award for excellence in broadcast journalism. In all, I have worked on three DuPont-Columbia-winning news teams.

Covered major stories including the re-election of Chicago’s first African American mayor and the political power scramble that followed his death, the rise of the Midwestern casino industry, the Oklahoma City bombing, and the repercussions of the civil rights movement.

Equipement/Studio : Pro Tools,

Media Experience : Audio Art, Community Radio, Radio Documentary, Multimedia production, Podcasting, Slideshow production,

Bio : Julia DeWitt believes that her interest in radio started way back in college as an anthropology student. She studied reintegration of combat-related PTSD in veterans and found that the way they told their own stories was far more compelling than any academic analysis she could slap on the interviews. After college she received a National Geographic Young Explorer grant to do a story-collecting project in the remote northwest of British Columbia, Canada. Tending bar in Boston she served many a storyteller at her local pub (and can make a tasty Sidecar). Her passion now clear to her, all she had to do was get some actual experience. She was trained in radio by the Kitchen Sisters and acculturated as editorial staff of Pop-Up magazine in San Francisco, CA. Julia signed up to be an associate producer at Snap Judgment to be part of the \"new wave of public radio\" (-Ira Glass). When she\'s not riding the wave, Julia likes to hike, bike, climb, and shred the gnar.
