Stevie Beck

Minneapolis , Minnesota,  55417
U.S.A.
612-825-6363 (Home)
sbeckmn@earthlink.net

Available For : writing, editing

Bio : Since 2000, Stevie Beck has been an independent writer, editor and consultant for a variety of corporate clients as well as Riverwalk Jazz, On Being, A Prairie Home Companion, and other radio shows. She has been associated with public radio for decades, starting with her first appearance on A Prairie Home Companion in 1974, when the host dubbed her “Queen of the Autoharp.”

Following her formal education — she holds a B.A. from the University of Nebraska and an M.A. from the University of Minnesota — she spent 15 years as a stringed-instrument repairperson, before moving on to full-time employment at Minnesota Public Radio — work not requiring Band-Aids. There, she was on the production teams of Good Evening with Noah Adams, First House on the Right, and A Prairie Home Companion.

These days, from her home office in south Minneapolis, she crafts artist bios and promotional materials, puts together press releases, and writes script copy and speeches.

But proofreading and copyediting are her strong suits — from light edits to slash-and-burn rewrites.

Equipement/Studio : Specialized mics,

Media Experience : Commercial Radio, Community Radio, Radio Documentary, Radio Drama, Television, On-air talent, Podcasting,

Bio : My initial foray into entertainment was an intensive 2003 internship at DreamWorks Television. Upon receiving a Bachelor of Science in Television and Radio Production from the Ithaca College Park School of Communication in 2004, I spent 4 years in Los Angeles working in both television production and development, primarily at Warner Bros Television and for a small production/development company called ACME. Returning to Connecicut in early 2009, I began pursuing professional voiceover work after many a humbling comment from not only friends and family, yet many a stranger I would either encounter in the MC work I do with a local events company known as After Hours DJ Entertainment or through co-managing events for a local venue that serves as my primary work since returning east. Concerning VO work, I have been involved with presentation narrations, commercial auditions through both agency interest and more recently a NYC based production studio. Recently, I have been expanding my knowledge of radio production and on-air promos through work with Connecticut Public Broadcasting/CPTV/NPR. Specifically, I have done everything from on-air radio promos to documentary narration to an on-going series of surgical product instructional video narations through a New Haven, CT based company called Covidien. Primarily, I am looking to expand my VO work which I have become quite passionate about.

Notes : Samples of my work are available upon request.
I am available to record from home in addition to having access to a number of local professional studios.
My voice is often described as baritone (deep, soothing and relaxing).

On long car rides, most families may listen to music, yet my parents fed my sisters and I All Things Considered, Car Talk and A Prairie Home Companion. My early exposure to this type of programming was, I believe, the catalyst for my journalistic career. Though I did not know I wanted to enter into the world of radio at first, I knew that no person should be used as a means to an end. Each story is a precious gift. It is the public media’s sociocultural responsibility to share and preserve its integrity while also utilizing its informative power.

Bio : Julie Burstein is a Peabody Award-winning radio producer who has spent her working life in conversation with highly creative people interviewing, probing, guiding, and creating public radio programs about them and their work. In her book "Spark: How Creativity Works" (Harper 2011), she maps out some of the coordinates and dimensions of creativity. No one can exactly explain creativity, but Julie offers a tour through some of its essential byways; shining a beam onto its mysterious workings in a way that is illuminating and can help us find more of that dimension within ourselves, and put it to good use.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art asked Julie to create a new series of onstage conversations, and Spark Talks at The Met begins in November of 2013. Julie spoke at TED2012, and she often gives talks about creativity and innovation at museums, corporations, and universities. She is sought after as a panel moderator for venues such as The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The American Museum of Natural History, WNYC, Wesleyan University, NYC Wildflower Week, and the Brooklyn Book and World Science Festivals.

In 2000, Julie created "Studio 360 with Kurt Andersen" for Public Radio International, public radio's premiere program about creativity, entertainment and the arts. She led the Studio 360 creative team at WNYC for many years. Julie is also known for her engaging on-air presence as a frequent guest host on The Leonard Lopate Show, she has created radio series for Carnegie Hall and the New York Philharmonic, and her many stories about arts and culture have appeared on public radio, from the secret to making Easter Peeps and Bunnies and the art of pumpkin carving for NPR, to reports about design, music, dance, theater, and visual arts for Studio 360 and Marketplace.

Julie is the host of pursuitofspark.com, conversations about creative approaches to the challenges, possibilities, and pleasures of everyday life and work.

When Julie is not speaking, writing, making radio, or spending time with her family, she can usually be found in the pottery studio.
